Reading

Have an overall comprehension of short expository and narrative selections; determine the main idea, the cause and effect, and probable outcomes of reading selections; and summarize ideas from a text.  Read and interpret authentic materials (e.g., selected short stories, poetry and other literary works, articles, personal correspondence, and simple technical material).

Writing Narrate and describe with detail in present, past and future time in writing. Compose and present stories, poems, and skits.  Compose messages, announcements, notes, advertisements, postcards, or simple letters beyond personal experiences. Explain a simple process, incorporating instructions. Summarize and interpret information from authentic material.
Speaking Present dialogues and scripts, respond to direct questions about simple topics, converse with others students during classroom activities, converse with other students in front of the class, and perform other dramatic activities. Ask and answer open-ended questions on a wide range of topics.  Express preferences, feelings, emotions, and opinions giving supporting details.  Demonstrate evidence of self-correction in communication with others.
